Father Morrow is an excellent writer and his spiritual wisdom is invaluable. I am most grateful that he wrote and published this book. My current life situation can produce bouts of anger from me, and I do not want it to control my actions. He provides very practical skills that if applied, can help me change my behavior. When I described to book to a friend of mind, she wants to read it because she is still dealing with anger about the lose of her husband, one of her daughters, and that daughter's child, in the last 8 years.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to handle anger from a spiritual perpective. I suggest you try the spiritual perspective versus the secular. I have had anger management training, and purused other books. The element missing is the alternative behavior's spiritual side, which gives my life a deeper root in stability and fortitude.
...If it wasn't for the chapter for married couples. My husband and I both had a good laugh. The author gives advice for wives to basically flirt with their husband when she's mad so as not to hurt her husband's manhood. Then to just shut up and take his anger. I can understand suggesting the wife not get nasty or mean when she's mad, but this advice seems to belittle the wife and her needs. The advice for husbands is to "listen" when she's mad and no advice on how he is to act when he is mad. I suggest you simply skip this chapter and read what could have been a five star book.
We chose this book for a women's discussion group and were all pretty disappointed in its lack of depth. I'm genuinely surprised at all the positive reviews and the lack of editing from an organization like Sophia Insitute, an organization I normally accredit with high quality publishing. There is very little discussion of what exactly makes an episode of anger "sinful" or not. The author does little to discuss healing the original source of anger and instead offers almost laughable suggestions for overcoming anger. These included calling your husband a "hairy beast" (????) when he is acting out in anger (almost to the point of dangerous anger) and the ever cliche "counting to ten". As married women and mothers, we all looked forward to the chapter on marriage and were all sorely let down. It was condescending to both husband and wife and the chapter itself was woefully brief. His examples were almost ludicrous. We all had great hopes that this book would be a good guide for dealing with anger but were very disappointed. I for one was looking forward help in uncovering the root causes of anger (lack of control, childhood wounds, etc.) and there is barely a mention. The only times we found ourselves reading something truly helpful was when it was a quote from someone ELSE and the best parts of our discussion were when we were sharing what he SHOULD have said instead. Don't waste your money.
- Why I Read This BookI am trying to eradicate sin, unjust anger included, from my life.- PositivesThe author does a good job of differentiating the mere feeling of anger from the sin of anger. That is, the involuntary emotion from the willful choice to act contrary to charity. He also provides many Scriptural passages on anger, as well as a few very brief stories about the saints."Turn Your Anger at God to Praise" is probably the most spiritually helpful chapter.- NegativesThere is only a brief mention of the difference between unjust anger (a desire for revenge) and just anger (a desire for justice?). The difference is not clear or elaborated. It would seem that a book devoted to anger should spend some time on this subject. But the biggest problem about the book is that most of the advice comes from psychologists. Psychology is essentially a secular ideology that happens to be founded by non-Catholics. It is an ethical system, where its goals are for "patients" to be "happy" or "healthy" in some secular fashion. Contrast this with the Catholic Church, founded by Jesus Christ, whose goal is for its members to serve God. Serving God is not always compatible with worldly happiness - in fact, frequently, it is not. So to write a "Catholic" book that is building off of the theoretical work of psychologists is highly suspect, to say the least.Interestingly, the book also draws teachings from a Native American and even two Protestants! Protestants are by their very nature anti-Catholic.This book does not emphasize traditional methods for staying in the state of grace. It does not emphasize the Ave Maria, the Rosary (which St. Louis de Montfort tells us is applicable to all problems, great and small), devotion to one's patron saint or guardian angel, and frequent Confession. It instead emphasizes flirting with one's spouse, bargaining with one's children, and other "feel good" suggestions.- Final ThoughtsSome of the advice contained in this book is good, while some is at the very least "fluffy" if not outright bad or unhelpful. Knowing this book's limitations, it might be OK for someone to quickly read through, ignoring the bad and taking the good. The best Christian writing I have found on anger is Augustine's sermon 63, taken from Essential Sermons (The Works of Saint Augustine) (Works of Saint Augustine. Part III, Homilies). This two page sermon is spiritually more useful than the entirety of Overcoming Sinful Anger.Other spiritual works I would recommend:The Secret Of The RosaryThe Secret of Confession: Including the Wonders of ConfessionSins of the Tongue:: The Backbiting TongueCatholic Prayers: Compiled from Traditional SourcesAnd I always recommend devotion to St. Philomena for any problem:Saint Philomena, the Wonder-WorkerSt. Philomena: Powerful With GodIn the first chapter, the author, a Novus Ordo priest, laments how often those who are "attending daily Mass and receiving Holy Communion" fall into anger. This is partly because the New Mass, brought about by the Second Vatican Council, is invalid. One should consult website of the Most Holy Family Monastery for more information on this subject.
I am baffled by how many people gave this five stars. The first five chapters gave somewhat vague advice, but chapter 6 “Calm Marital Anger†was a huge disappointment. I would imagine many people turn to this book to help heal their marriage and this chapter gives advice that is degrading and demeaning to both men and women by suggesting women show their anger “adorably†in a “childish†way and “only use adjectives that will uphold his masculinity such as big, tough†etc. What’s even worse is giving the example of St. Monica handling her abusive husband. “Many of her friends suffered bruises from their husbands, but Monica didn’t, because she knew when to be quiet and when to speak.†My jaw dropped when I read this. How many women stuck in abusive marriages blame themselves for the abuse they receive? This is an irresponsible message to be sending couples, especially when they are seeking spiritual advice. Very sad and disappointed in this book.
