I work in the biotech industry and I read this book after it was recommended by a colleague.It is not a science textbook or an in depth overview of the immune system, but a glimpse into the colorful dispositions and motivations of the pioneers of cancer immunotherapy. The author does an amazing job capturing the personalities and driving forces that inspired these individuals to pursue their research that have resulted in cures for certain types of cancer.It is interesting to read how this unrecognized niche of science, and the key players who stuck with it, evolved to be mankind’s greatest hope to cure cancer (at least for now).A must read for anybody in the biotech industry, med school, oncology marketing/research, families battling cancer or anybody looking for a unique perspective into the minds and work of some the unsung heroes out there saving lives.
A thoroughly engaging story about scientific discovery, centering on a specific piece of the cancer puzzle—immunotherapy. With a novelist’s flair, the author profiles two dozen of the field’s foremost researchers. These minibios are more entertaining than encyclopedic, keying in on defining moments—both personal and professional—that shaped each expert or set them on the path of discovery. My favorite vignette concerns a female scientist forced to relaunch her career in order to emerge from the shadow of her husband, also a researcher. Her subsequent discoveries, born of gender bias, may help save countless lives. From childhood inspirations to roads not taken, ceilings shattered or circumvented, research bedeviled by uncertainty, failure, or lack of funding… the stories humanize the scientists while also detailing/demystifying the science. Illustrations hand-drawn by the scientists are a fun and unique feature.
A number one book that can be read by both lay persons and professional, my wife read in 24 hours I took 96 but I stop and look up references along the way, and reviewed some immunology along the way since I worked in anaesthesia for my career and went to med school over 50 years ago.Vern Usher
This is an unusual popular science book. The narrative goes through interviews of the scientists involved. The topic is the discovery of a new group of cancer drugs that make the immune system aware of a growing cancer allowing it to destroy the cancer. Despite written by a journalist, it does require a good knowledge of biology and some knowledge in immunology to be fully enjoyed. The book sometimes tries to explain a biological problem very simply and at other places requiring a lot of knowledge. I do like the insights into the personalities and their fight to overcome obstacles in research. Book is certainly more suitable and enjoyable for readers with a science background.
It is not a science book, but it gives you an insight in the lives of scientists, that have dedicated their life to finding a cancer cure using the immune system. Our immune system is the most powerful weapon against disease and with the right tools it can be used to fight cancer. Immunology gives hope to all cancer patients. Highly recommended read for both cancer patients and people interested in immunology.
I was in college when much of this foundational work was being performed. I saw some of these presentations at conferences I attended as a student. The writing is excellent. The book does require a reasonable understanding of the immune system and tools used in immunology research.
Neil Canavan animates those who made the key immuno-oncology observations. At once, we recognize a revolution in the making. We live in special times.
