About the Author
About the AuthorsSheila and Jane have been colleagues and friends for… well, let’s just say a long time. As English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, they worked together on lots of projects… and had lots of fun as they worked. A partnership was born! Together, Jane and Sheila have teaching credentials in several states and two continents. With years and years… and years… of experience (they just don’t want to count them all, ha!), they have taught ESL to little kids, big kids, university students, adults, company executives, and other teachers in the U.S. and Europe (both online and in regular classroom settings). Both Sheila and Jane have served as members of the New Jersey Department of Education Advisory Committee for ESL/Bilingual Education. They’ve facilitated online ESL training courses for teachers through the NJ DOE professional development program. Sheila has held several leadership positions scoring teacher candidate responses for an international testing company, and Jane has written ESL test questions and rated English as a Foreign Language exams for another internationally recognized testing company. (They teach, they test, they score!) They have won many awards for excellence in teaching, including two Teacher of the Year awards, and corporate citations for excellence. They’ve given numerous presentations and have written curriculum and syllabi for diverse ESL populations. Add to this some fun teaching projects in Spanish, public speaking, drama, writing… and, we’re not kidding, even soccer skills and you’ve got two writers who know how to have a good time writing a book! Jane is now the Director of ESL Services for Emory College of Arts and Sciences in Atlanta, Georgia. Sheila is a lecturer in the English Language Program at the University of Pennsylvania, and continues to teach, write and consult in New Jersey and New York. Although they live several states away, both are happy to find time to work together on fun projects… like this book!

This book is not at all what i had expected. I am a professional ESL tutor. This book is very small in size and is cheaply made. It is so tiny, that I will not be able to open the book up and share with my student during a lesson. The paper is thin and the black print is hardly readable on the page. Don't the authors realize ESL students need large, clear print to read the lessons? The tiny size of the pages means the information is crammed on the page and it looks visually overwhelming to the student. I don't understand the high marks for this book on amazon, are these from actual people? The content of the lessons is also questionable. They are using what they refer to as casual English and recommend students leave sounds off of words, such as ING at the end of words. They have other bizarre suggestions for the English learner as-if their target audience is teenagers at a video arcade. This book is not appropriate for those learners seeking proper English pronunciation for job interviews, college entrance or more lofty goals. This is one of my biggest disappointments so far in purchasing an ESL book
I bought this book a few weeks ago to use to teach my ESL class. Unfortunately, the English that's presented in this book is the everyday English that we native speakers speak to our friends. There is just to much slang, dropping of letters, and other shortcuts that are unsuitable for the beginning ESL student. I will have to look for another book, which is too bad as I had high hopes for this one. Take care.
After trying several books to make our classes more enjoyable, but still keeping to the subject, I came across this book. I was delighted with the format, subject matter, and enjoyment this book offers. I presented it to my students and they were immediately taken by how much more fun this was. An added bonus is the CD which is included, and how it allows them to listen on their own at home with the assurance that they are practicing the correct pronunciation of the words. I see a marked difference in student participation since we included this book in our studies.
I tried to study vocabulary many times, with no value. I ususally found people speak in a different way. They say words, not the ones I found in the VOC books. Till I found this book. It gives the voc that people really use. Something reflecting real life and casual conversation, not formal ones.It is a really good book and useful for non-native speakers, it can help us speak and understand what the native speakers say. Thanks a lot
It's a good book for learning American idioms and culture for intermediate learners. Yes, some terms that they explain are very simple, while others are advanced, they should have indicated the advanced ones so that beginners can skip them. If you are a beginner you may benefit from somebody telling you which words you should focus on and which you should ignore for now.
My adult ESL Vietnamese cousin-in-law and I have used this book this year to work on her English skills and to familiarize her with American culture and slang. It has been enjoyable and informative. The authors get a little too silly at times for my taste, but that's a minor issue. Some of the chapters were not relevant to my student but would be to many others. She learned a great deal from this book.
This book is great for our students. Although they get grammar and vocabulary practice in class, the dialogues are very good at putting the language of everyday life into the American cultural context, colloquial speech included. They get better exposure to English as they will actually hear it. The CD lets them listen to the dialogues at home to practice their listening skills. Although we've just started using the book, I'm pleased with how it's going. I'm looking forward to progressing through it in the coming months.I view this book as more of a supplemental resource for our students since it assumes a working knowledge of basic English. That working knowledge is what our classes are developing. It would not be appropriate for true beginners. After three semesters of our once-a-week class, I find our students are ready to start with the book, albeit moving slowly at first. If you are working with English learners at an intermediate level, I would recommend you take a look at this book. Whether or not you use it as your primary resource, I think you'll find it's useful.Overall, it's a good value considering it includes the CD with the book.
I purchased this as a Christmas present for my international friend who is taking English lessons in her country. She has never expressed so much joy in receiving a gift as she has with this gift. She said its charming and loves the fun aspect of it. What is the best thing in learning a new language? It has to be fun if course! The recipient is a 60+ yr old and this was easy to use and immediately useful as a companion to her English classes. Thanks to all the reviews that guided me in purchasing this book!
