From the Inside Flap
(back cover) Syl Sobel transforms America’s history into an exciting adventure When the U.S. Constitution was first written, many of the freedoms we now take for granted were not yet guaranteed. Nowhere did the Constitution say anything about freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, protection from unreasonable searches and seizures, to name just a few of them. Many Americans feared that the government might someday take away these rights, just as the British had done when the American states were still colonies. That was when the people added ten new amendments to the Constitution, clearly guaranteeing many basic rights to all citizens. Those first ten amendments are called The Bill of Rights. Author Syl Sobel describes each of these rights, and in the process he points out many fascinating facts that are a part of America’s history. Here is a book that will be valued by teachers and enjoyed by students. As a homeschooling mother, I am very concerned about bias in the curriculum I choose, particularly when it comes to history and government. Ideally, I should not be able to ascertain the author's political ideology from the published work, and that is definitely the case with this book. I have no idea if Syl Sobel is liberal or conservative. The book is well-written, and keeps my child's interest. It gives a history of the Constitution, and the reasons the Founders had for adding the Bill of Rights to the Constitution. It also touches on the controversy between Federalists and Anti-Federalists, and explains why some of the Founders were against adding a Bill of Rights to the Constitution. The book then gives a short synopsis of each of the first Ten Amendments, along with the historical background that led to the need for each amendment. This book is devoid of political opinion and simply states the facts.
As a homeschooler, I will be returning this book as I can't use it. It is nothing more than the author's interpretation and explanation without including the actual wording of the Bill of Rights. All I had to do was turn to the Second Amendment page in order to see if it's accurate or biased. It's biased. It's labeled "Second Amendment- The Right to Keep and Bear Arms" then is summarized as the people wanting to maintain the right to form militias after the Revolutionary War, and today we have the National Guard troops to serve as militias for us. This implies that the Second Amendment is outdated, and does not include the words anywhere that this right shall not be infringed upon. Why is it so hard to find materials the "teach" the Constitution by including the actual wording of the Constitution? Why are these materials saturated with someone's point of view of the meaning, while hiding away the real thing? Students should at least be allowed to form their own viewpoints without using another's as the factual foundation. There's an agenda and this book is no different from the rest.
These were PERFECT for my 8 and 11 year old to help explain the elections that are going on right now that our family is following oh so closely. It's been kinda cool after the kids reading these that they have a better understanding and we can now talk politics as a family ;-)
Great book for parents trying to give their kids history and not someone else's agenda. No agenda here. The author tells it like it is point of fact and keeps the politics out as much as possible. The book has the Bill of rights written out as they are written. They are not paraphrased.
could be better
Accessible and thorough, this book did the trick for our curious 7 year old. It's a fun way to learn about the rules that govern our country and offers some interesting food for thought as to how a country is created and how, over time, additions and clarifications to those rules are an essential part of the process.
I recently started homeschooling my 5th grader and this book was perfect! He had learned a little about the Constitution, but this teaches the things schools leave out. Love it!
I really like the way this book is laid out. Will be looking at his other books for our homeschool curriculum.
