This mystery book had some clever and amusing parts, but overall, it was just an okay book for me. I enjoyed the setting and the main characters, as well as the idea of a retired police officer becoming a detective with the aid of a baby elephant. The murder mystery was probably the weakest part for me. I was not that invested in trying to figure it out. This is the first book in a series and I don’t think that I will be reading any more of them. The book is set in Mumbai, India. Inspector Ashwin Chopra has been a successful police officer with strong morals and values. He is forced into retirement due to a heart attack. However, on his last day at work a boy is found dead. His superior rules it a suicide by drowning and will not allow an investigation. Chopra cannot tolerate injustice and investigates secretly on his own. At the time of his retirement, he is gifted a “special” baby elephant by his uncle. The elephant will not eat and appears depressed. Chopra is trying to learn about elephants while he is investigating the boy’s death. Chopra lives in an apartment with his wife Poppy and his interfering mother-in-law. There are some interesting characters in the apartment complex who either aid or frustrate Chopra. In addition to the mystery, this is also a comedy of errors. Chopra is investigating the death in secret, even from his wife. He is also planning a surprise for her. As a result, she believes that he is having and affair. She hatches a plan to win back her husband. Of course, everything is sorted out in the end and Chopra and Poppy start a new life in retirement. This is a pleasant, easy, and quick read. I enjoyed Mumbai as a setting and it is nice to see a detective of color. I did not find the writing or the mystery very compelling. This is a decent book if you want something light and uncomplicated.

Vaseem Khan has created a lovely cast of characters: Inspector Chopra, his wife, Poppy, Ganesh, the baby elephant and the inhabitants and workers of Mumbai. His story and descriptions are interesting, while relaxing. I felt myself smile as I read. I can "see" Mumbai and its people in his writing and I can imagine the characters because of the good dialog. Love the relaxing and lyrical pace of his writing. Reminds me of the Donna Leone Inspector Brunetti mysteries and the relaxed Alexander McCall Smith detective stories of Africa. Have started the second book and am looking forward to more in the series.

I read a lot of mysteries that I like a lot but don't review (I should, I know), but felt compelled to write this one. This book is like a trip to modern India and gives you both the sights and sounds and smells--and the feelings about the changes the nation has experienced. The main character is someone you would want to call "friend": a decent man, an honest (retired) policeman who is surrounded by a platoon of funny and interesting characters and...a remarkable baby elephant. The writing is lovely--lots of good word choices and a smooth, effortless style. This is a book for people who read for enjoyment and maybe are more tired of the mayhem and slick fashionable bleakness of our contemporary world and its entertainment than they realize. I ordered the next books in the series without hesitation.

I really loved this book and hope it's the beginning of a long and consistently good series. The baby elephant is hard to resist but more importantly this is not an "oh look at the charming natives" type series. Inspector Chopra is a serious, competent inspector with integrity, now retired for health reasons, who undertakes an investigation informally but professionally. The mystery is well-crafted, and the journey through Mumbai and Indian culture is interesting and informative to someone like myself who has never been. The character of the wife and mother-in-law are a bit over the top and it would be nice to have female characters portrayed more as real characters and less as comic relief.

I read this as a free first-in-series. Kept hoping for a chance meeting with the mysterious uncle and more of an explanation about the elephant but that did not happen. A lot of vocabulary and culture related to India that had me in the dictionary a lot, something I got tired of after awhile. Not a bad read and I would not mind reading more about the elephantine adventures but not so much so that I am willing to dish out the Kindle price and knowing I will be back in the dictionary again. The crime was also disturbing for what I thought would be a light mystery.

If an elephant can be called cozy, then Ganesha is he.Characters are well-delineated, although, if I were sensitive, I might take umbrage at the author's readiness to take a pot belly as indicating innate criminality. "The sense of place" is important, since the city of Mumbai is also a leading character in the novel. For readers who like to solve "the crime", the book may be disappointing, as most of the plot twists are of the sentimental or cozy variety, rather than of the who-dunnit type.
