This book is a must have for ANY GIS Administrator! The author does a fantastic job of breaking down 4 primary components of Enterprise Administration. From installation, to use, to extremely useful scripts, to security, the author tells you exactly what you need to know and what to avoid to prevent mistakes. Portal, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Datastore, ArcGIS Web Adaptor, SSL certificates, Web services and applications, heck even some very important database tidbits are all discussed. Any of us that use Enterprise GIS Administration have made a number of mistakes in either the installation or in the use of the software, I know I have. Chad not only shows you how to avoid those mistakes but he also includes some very handy scripts that can easily be scheduled to save you a lot of time. I also love that the author throws in some humor throughout the book to make some tricky concepts fun and easy to understand.I highly recommend this book to any ArcGIS Enterprise Administrator!
Mr. Cooper’s new book, Mastering ArcGIS Enterprise Administration, is a useful and handy guide worthy of your desktop reference library and as a thorough step-by-step guide to deploying ArcGIS Enterprise 10.5.1.Chad’s “from nothing to fully deployed†approach in Mastering ArcGIS Enterprise Administration begins with the basic components of an ArcGIS Enterprise deployment and finishes with excellent recommendations for administration. Along the way, he manages to balance providing well indexed reference content that is easily accessible while still including what most GIS practitioners would consider advanced content. For the adventurous and seasoned veterans, there are a few chapters (Chapter 7: Scripting Administrative Tasks & Chapter 8: The ArcGIS Python API) containing impactful sample code in Python and advanced administration techniques. While delivering all of this, Chad includes quick primers for some big and frequently complicated topics like enterprise geodatabases configuration, security, and troubleshooting techniques – for once you have everything up and running.I’ve had Mr. Cooper’s reference book handy now for deployments in Azure and AWS both of which are included in the section entitled “ArcGIS Enterprise in the cloudâ€. Chad’s book is a vital tool for negotiating the sometimes-scary topic of ArcGIS Enterprise administration. It is my opinion that he succeeds here in delivering a comprehensive reference book for ArcGIS Enterprise administration, and I’d recommend it heartily to those about to tackle a new deployment.
Esri's online documentation is excellent but often frustratingly fragmented. Particularly with the server technologies that involve many third-party systems it is difficult for someone to quickly get an overview of the product as a whole. I would consider this book required reading for anybody who wants to begin working with ArcGIS Enterprise because it summarizes everything nicely in a coherent narrative. The book is almost divided into two parts for two different audiences - the first nearly half is an introduction to the technologies and most of what you need to know to get started and the second half is a more in-depth guide to scripting and more advanced administrative toolkits. I've worked with ArcGIS Enterprise for a bit so was able to skim through the first half but found the second half extremely valuable. I would say that if you are more GIS and less "techy" then you'll get a lot out of the first half but may find the second half a challenge. If you're technically-inclined with some experience already with ArcGIS Enterprise then you'll get more out of the second half. If you're in that sweet spot of being reasonably techy with little to no existing ArcGIS Enterprise experience then you will find this entire book to have tremendous value. As other reviewers have mentioned, since this is a single book there are many tangents that are not completely explored. Cloud deployments and upgrades are examples, but there are other topics that could have entire books devoted to them such as the arcgis Python API and even the Esri-provided utilities for Data Store and Portal. I have a lot of homework to do after reading this book, but I think so much of the value in the technical section is the introduction and example use cases of the available tools (including third-party and open-source ones).I wouldn't consider this to be a reference book so much as a self-guided training manual. I will be going back to the book to look up links to tools that I want to follow up on again but it's not something to be pulled off the shelf on a regular basis. It should be read, digested, and passed along to your co-workers. Kudos for bringing together a wide array of different technologies in a single guide, something that is very difficult to do on your own when trying to navigate the different online documentation sources.
A guide that is complete and up to date while keeping it simple. Finally, an arcgis enterprise textbook that can be picked up for immediate implementation with the "caveats and gotchas"as well as easy to read reference. This guide has everything in one book with the a most recent version of ArcSDE. This resource is as useful for newbies as it is for experts, covering portal, arcgis server without portal, ArcSDE admin, publishing, scripting, python API, best practices, and standards.
I have always wanted to purchase this book but backed off because it was too expensive. Finally when i found a used book i was worried it might be too worn out or might not be legible but i was surprised when i open the package. It was as good as a new book. Also i liked the note from whoever it was from textbooknook. Keep up the good work and all the best.
