I love the Lady Julia Grey mysteries for their impeccable research and compelling storytelling. Ms. Rayburn has eased quite effortlessly into a vastly different millieu, and she has spun a tale that leaves you wondering, even at its conclusion, whether vampires are real. The only weak point for me was the resolution of the love story, which came out of the blue and was unconvincing. Better to have had the count work to win Theodora in a way that would have revealed his transformation through actions, rather than merely to tell us that he had transformed. There was a whole subplot that got left behind. After the tempestuous Lady Julia and Nicholas Brisbane saga, the reunion between Theodora and the count was rather tame, and without any real suspense.

This was an entertaining enough read, but not up to the level I've come to expect from Raybourn's Lady Julia novels. There is an interesting contrast between the intelligent and respectful way in which the author treats the folklore of the Carpathians and the often simplistic personal interactions of her main characters -- they are stock figures (spirited heroine, ominous housekeeper, darkly handsome but mysterious Count, etc.), their dialog is peppered with cliches, and they exhibit too many improbable motivations to be credited. Surely, real people do not behave in such ways -- even in gothic novels (and I'm prepared to suspend a degree of belief in the course of a good storyline). I won't reveal the best example of this implausible behavior, because it would ruin a plot surprise, but when it occurred in the storyline, it so beggared belief that it caused me to groan aloud. Furthermore, the relationship between the heroine and the Count is about as sophisticated as a Barbara Cartland romance. On the positive side, the plot twists cleverly, and the atmosphere is created so evocatively that one can share with the heroine the frissons she felt when the chill mountain wind carried the cries of wolves in the night. For my money, Raybourn's brilliant description of the mountain castle is the best thing in the novel -- it is almost elevated to character status. Overall, this novel could have been a wonderful and creative re-working of the gothic genre, but for me, it fell short of the mark.

Her sister wants her to find someone to marry and her publisher has proposed marriage to her. But while Theodora is fond of him, she wants true love. So when a former school friend, Cosmina invites her to stay with her for several months in a castle in Transylvania, Theodora jumps at the chance. She thinks the atmosphere will be perfect for the novel she wants to write. She is immediately attracted to the strange Count Andrei Dragulescu, Cosmina's cousin. But Theodora finds that the stories Cosmina used to tell her in school are not just considered folklore by the townspeople and that they believe in werewolves and vampires. After a maid in the castle is found dead with fang marks in her neck, Theodora is unsure what to believe.my review: I enjoyed the author's Lady Julia series and was unsure what to expect of this novel. But I really liked the Gothic atmosphere and the creepy characters. Theodora is young but knows what she wants. I liked her a lot. I also thought Andrei sounded sexy even while I wondered if he was a vampire.I know some have been disappointed in this novel as compared to her series but I think I liked this one better. It was deliciously creepy and as it is a stand alone novel it didn't get bogged down with setting things up for future books. Of course I liked Theodora and Andrei so much that I would like it to be a series but then their relationship would have dragged on like Lady Julia and Nicholas Brisbane.This is not a paranormal book but a dark, thriller in an excellent setting. It seemed like the author really did her research and created a fantastic mystery. I would have loved to stay in a castle in Transylvania though I would have been scared silly. I thought that the ending had some nice twists and I was unsure what to expect for much of this novel. It was worth the read alone for the atmosphere but Raybourn served up much more. I was sorry to have it end. This is a definite re-read for me!my rating- 4.5/5

Using the poster of the prodigal son available through Amazon and Nouwen's well written reflection on this parable, many of us were able to be transformed into a new way of thinking about our place in the world, particularly among our closest friends and family. Inspirational in every way, our conversations have turned to how well we are moving toward the "loving father." At the same time, we have a new understanding of how often we stand firmly in the grip of the failings of the elder son. Moving toward the light is always difficult, but worth it!

This book is terrific! I am a biblical scholar ( I have a master's degree in Biblical Languages) and I have never looked at the parable of the Prodigal Son through the lens of Rembrandt's painting although that particular parable is one of my favorites and Rembrandt is my favorite painter. Henri Nouwen's book is accessible and spiritually filling at the same time. Each chapter reminds us of how the world and our own lack of self-esteem can interfere with our relationship with the all-loving God. The book is broken up into chapters that reflect the perspective of the artist and the figures in the painting (who reflect the characters in the parable). Nouwen reveals how the painting and the story reflect issues in his own relationship with God and issues that no doubt affect our relationship with God as well as steps to correct the problems. I recommend this book highly.

I have read it twice and have bought extra copies to give to people.Most people know that they have rebellious patterns in their life and feel like a prodigal child at times. They want to be forgiven, they want to start over. They know a change needs to be made, but where do you start...This book gives answers to these questions, but more then that I show us that we also need to deal with the other elder brother who is inside each of us. The brother who feels slighted, used, looked over, unappreciated, etc. That soul is also hurting and needs some love and forgiveness.But the kicker in this book is... That eventually we all need to become the loving forgiving FATHER, to help others through our forgiveness and personal blessing. We have all been the two brothers. We now need to nurture ourselves and grow in to the adult Father or Mother for all the little prodigal children that come our way. Blessings

This is a book written with amazing insight into what the story of the Prodigal Son really meant to the author, and what it revealed to me about me. I like to read things that help me to grow spiritually, and most books of that nature I do not read as novels- this book will do it for you, if you can accept the premises the author makes. I found that I am very much like both sons- petulant, arrogant, jealous, humiliated by my own tendencies toward envious narcisstic behaviors, feeling at times unforgivable and unforgiving. This book helped to change my attitudes and judgments about others, and I understand more fully what requirements are needed to more fully Love God and my Neighbor, as Jesus expressed. This is a book of emotion and intellect. Who do you see yourself as? The son who received forgiveness for bad behavior, or the son whose jealousy held him back from recognizing who he was in his Father's eyes.

Yes, this is a book of spirituality, but it is far more than that!This book should be required reading for entry into adulthood, into marriage, into parenthood, as well as entering middle age, not to mention before taking on the label of "elderly".There is no greater compliment than being called Mom or Dad. A must read to educate yourself instead of relying on others that have money agendas, not your health first in their minds, or have bought into propaganda by those with money agendas; i.e., doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and the whole health care support network that feeds off people/money who are not being informed of reasonable, cheaper, safer health care alternatives. Don't buy into scare mongering and, yes, I have had chelation myself and so has my husband.

Very informative with information that most of the general population is not aware of. Care about their health?, buy this book! This book could actually prevent you ever needing bypass surgery, which is heart surgery. Then there is the cost and trauma of that type of operation. The title might lead someone to think it is all about one thing but that is not exactly true. I haven't read all of it yet, it is not boring, like you might think it would be. I think it is a must read and the cost of this book is a great bargain for what it will do for the reader.

Well written book that influenced our decision to undergo EDTA treatments. My GP said my stress test showed a blockage. My husband had two successive stent operations one year apart and was unable to take statins. Cardiologist said if the blockage continued, they could not place any more stents because of the location. After chelation, I went to a cardiologist who did an echo stress, which was fine. My husband has not had any more blockages. Since I did not have an angiogram, I cannot prove that I actually had a blockage. However, we are pleased that my husband has avoided bypass surgery for several years (and he is tested regularly by a cardiologist who does not promote chelation. It obviously doesn't work for everyone, but feel it worked for us.

I do not know the exact number but somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 percent (give or take 10) of these enzymes are "sulf-hydryl" enzymes. That is, they are ordinary enzymes that have a sulfur and hydrogen attached.This is the problem. Heavy metals are strongly attracted to these sulf-hydryl sites and after attaching they render the enzyme unusable by our systems. What are heavy metals? Lead, we all know lead can kill us, mercury and arsenic, the same. But the list also includes aluminum, cadmium and other metals that we do not normally consider toxic.So - what's the big deal? First, heavy metals in our systems are like "Hotel California" they check in ok but don't check out. They stay in our cells for a very very long time. Thus we are accumulating them throughout the course of our lives. Second the more heavy metals we have in our system the less efficient our energy manufacturing facilities are. It is exactly analogous to pulling two spark plug wires off the engine of your car. It will not have the energy it needs to perform.It is my OPINION that many of the gradually debilitating diseases we seem to have so much in this country could be avoided if our bodies were performing at maximum efficiency.Chelation therapy - what this book is about - "gets the lead out" and the arsenic and the cadmium and the aluminum and restores your body's energy production system back to full steam. This is a good thing!Not surprisingly, when your body's energy production system is in top shape a lot of very interesting things happen. The blood supply to your brain increases, Your cardiovascular system begins to perform better and on and on and on.In my research when I had apparently killed a colony of blue green algae completely, nothing left in the E-flask but an ugly brown clump lurking in the very bottom. I could sprinkle a little EDTA in the flask, give it a good shake, and two days later there would be a green vibrant mass of healthy algae!What do the MDs say? (this is America and I am, so far, still allowed to express my opinions) They do not like it because EDTA is not a patentable compound therefore there is not a lot of money to be made by the drug companies. AND a quadruple bypass makes a lot more money for a physician than $3,000 for a series of ten IV treatments of EDTA. What else do they say? They say that it strips out all of the calcium from your body and you will break all your bones, Also, in my opinion, horse hocky. I have been doing chelation for the last 15 years and I know dozens of folks in the same boat and so far, not one broken bone, or calcium deficiency among us. It is wise to take a mineral supplement when doing chelation so that the body can be assured of maintaining the proper levels of good metals.Note to L. Berg, another review writer. Do yourself a favor and compare the number of deaths/strokes resulting from bypass surgery to the statistics on chelation. Truth is a good thing!

A curious book - showcasing flashes of talent and really wonderful insight, but a bit unfocused.My original impression of the book is only my own fault. Having read only the synopsis and not the genre, I went into it believing that it was a short story with a speculative fiction bent. It was through this lens originally that the book read as somewhat unfocused, sometimes painting clear portraits of the 52 Blue adherents, but jumping often, rarely dwelling on a theme or a single person. After having re-examined the book as a piece of journalism, it seems more cohesive, as it would be more reasonable indeed to have less of a clear narrative arc. Still, with Leonora's story highlighted in the synopsis, it would have been nice to see her arc presented part and parcel with that of 52 Blue.I'm looking forward to reading The Gin Closet to see Jamison's fiction work!

I like the second half of the book much more than the first half. At first, I thought it was going to be a relatively science story about the whale. And then, when it came to chapter 3, the story of Leonora randomly came up. Chapter 4 came back to the whale; chapter 5 was about Leonora again; chapter 6 talked about the whale; chapter 7 went back to Leonora. I was just so confused at first because I couldn’t see any connection between whale 52 and Leonora.At the end of chapter 7, Leonora thought “I wish I could whale.” At that point, I started to realize that it probably because they were both lonely. However, when I expected to see more about Leonora, her story stopped here. You bought more characters into the book: May Ann Daher, Juliana, Emerson, Shorna, etc. All of them were, to some extent, lonely and isolated. And they related to themselves with whale 52.I saw Leonora again in chapter 14. You emphasized her psychological connection to whale 52. Now, that was the first time I could really see the relationship between whale 52 and the people you mentioned here. And then, you started to switch between Leonora and Whale 52 again.I kinda know what you were doing. By having the two story lines switched around, you created a parallel between whale 52 and Leonora, as well as the other people you mentioned in the book. I really like the second half of the book. However, the order of the beginning was very odd. I almost wanted to quit reading at one point. If I really did so, I would never know how interesting it was at the end.Maybe you can find a way to make the parallel more obvious at the beginning. In that case, the organization of the book would be much better. I really like the end, especially the part you said 52 Blue was a metaphor for loneliness. After I finished the book, I could really see a connection between whale 52 and the people. I also think it would be great if you could make the readers see the connection more clear from the beginning.

Jamison, in “52 Blue,” starts strongly with an enticing introductory chapter. It includes an adequate amount of mystery to the whale’s story as well as setting the scene of the whale’s discovery. Additionally, Leonora’s introduction in Chapter Three is heartfelt and forces the reader to want to know how her story fits in with that of the unique whale. With such a strong set up, Jamison makes promises to deliver answers. The rest of “52 Blue,” however, fails to deliver such promises. The story gets muddled down by the amount of personal accounts from random individuals regarding how they relate personally to 52 Blue’s story. While a few accounts would have been enough, there were too many for me to care about all of them. I found myself skimming through the several chapters dedicated to how the story inspired those of other individuals. While the almost vignette style of storytelling within the piece was successful in the beginning at establishing a sense of intrigue and mystery, there is not enough development throughout the rest of the narrative to truly deliver. Leonora’s story, too, does not fully develop into something substantially interesting either. I felt myself expecting something to come out of her ties to the whale only to be disappointed when nothing happens beyond her identifying with the whale’s supposed loneliness. The self-awareness of Chapter Ten, however, addresses these accounts and also allows for some great insight. Jamison, here, ties together examples of individuals projecting their own emotions into nature with the buzz around 52 Blue in such a way that is insightful and analytical. However, this insight is not enough to deliver a satisfying end to the piece.

Although an interesting story, it was definitely unlike anything I have read before. The idea of a Moby Dick parallel caught my attention, and I wanted to read more about this whale that became such an icon to so many different people; however, I thought that the story of 52 Blue was not as strong as I had hoped for. The author opens up with a chapter about the first discovery of the whale, but the all of a sudden he jumps into the background story of a dying woman. I found the story about the whale to be a bit inconsistent, because it was shadowed by so many other surrounding stories. After reading the first chapter about the woman who bled a lot, I had no idea how she related to 52 Blue. Her story also took away from the main theme of the story (which I'm assuming is about the whale) because of how unique her situation was. I didn't quite understand how so many people made so much out of the sounds of one whale, and I felt that it was slightly over-interpreted. The psychological aspect of people's faith in this mysterious creature, however, was interesting and the author did do a good job reporting as well as gathering information from those who were affected by 52 Blue.

An interesting saga of a special creature's travels, and how they were tracked. The underlying mystery of what makes this particular whale's song so unique and what has become of the whale leaves the reader feeling a bit wistful.

I don't know how I missed this true story but it was new to me. I enjoyed reading this account and followed it with some additional reading about 52 Blue whale.

If you only want to read one book in preparation for a tour of the Atlanta Campaign in the Civil War, whether guided or self-guided, this would be the one. My research into the Atlanta Campaign involved several detailed books on various aspects and specific battles of the campaign. The last book in my research in preparation for a recent Civil War Tours (cwt) trip to the Atlanta area was Miles' book. I read the historical entries in the book, then skimmed the touring materials to get a general feel for the geography of the campaign. During each day's journey, I kept my attention on the CWT tour guide and the provided CWT tour battlefield maps to ensure I could properly locate each bus stop and the significance.(notes in the margins). At the end of each day I spent 1-2 hours comparing my notes with the appropriate material in Fields of Glory to confirm what I had seen and heard that day, and reconciling my memories of the sites with the verbal descriptions in Miles' book. My notes during the days ended up adding very little to the material already available in this book. What this means to me is that once I've located where we are on the battlefield map, no further notes are necessary - just let the guide tell the story and visualize the battle. If I need to remind myself later what happened and where, I will refer to Miles' book. If I ever get back to Atlanta and want to do this campaign again, it will be self-guided using this book. I will definitely check out other Guide Books in this series for future Civil War Seminars and Tours.

In fact there has been a recent upswing in "Heritage Tourism," and with the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War quickly approaching I can only imagine the number of heritage tourists is only going to grow. Though guided tours are great, they are often prohibitively expensive for the average tourist. Besides, I would rather invest a small amount of money and buy a great guide book, follow the footprints of history at my own leisurely pace."The Civil War Explorer" is a terrific series of guidebooks written by Jim Miles published by Cumberland House Publishing of Nashville. Among the series' titles is "Fields of Glory: A History and Tour Guide of the War in the West, The Atlanta Campaign, 1864," which is currently in its second edition."Fields of Glory" traces the route of Sherman's campaign and capture of Atlanta. Mr. Miles has broken the tour up into several easily manageable sections: Ringgold to Dalton, Tilton & Resaca, from Adairsville to Cassville, Cartersville to Pickett's Mill, Kennesaw Mountain, from Roswell to Peach Tree Creek, and finally a tour of Atlanta and Jonesboro.Introducing each section of the tour is a historical overview which puts the sites to which he will eventually guide his readers into their proper historical context. Once you climb in the car with Mr. Miles book as a guide (I highly recommend taking another person along with you to act as a navigator) there detailed turn by turn instructions to take you to the tour stops. Along the way, Mr. Miles has supplemented his text with several thumbnail, biographical sketches covering many of the most prominent players in the drama unfolding before you. Not only does Mr. Miles take his readers to all of the must see places, but also he takes them off the beaten path to see things that many casual tourists may miss.Any one who buys Mr. Miles book is getting two tours for the price of one, as also covered in the book are many sites related to "The Great Locomotive Chase" detailed by Russell Bonds in his book "Stealing the General: The Great Locomotive Chase and the First Medal of Honor."Mr. Miles' book serves as a great companion book to two other recent books about the Campaign and battles for Atlanta, "The Bonfire: The Siege and Burning of Atlanta" by Marc Wortman and "War Like the Thunderbolt: The Battle and Burning of Atlanta," another book by Russell Bonds."Fields of Glory" is a must have for every heritage tourist who finds him or herself in Northwestern Georgia. You can easily cover a section or two of the tour in a day, but if you would like to take the whole tour, and see everything, I would highly suggest scheduling a week of vacation, as you will most surely need it.

Finding Civil War related sites in North Georgia is no mean feat, but Miles' book really helps. I was able to see the majority of the most important sites in the Atlanta Campaign on a two day whirlwind car tour by following the route laid out by Fields of Glory. (Although a faithful and through tour following the book would have taken several days at least.) The interpretive background provided about each stop is extremely valuable, and I'm sure many of the sites I visited are not the sort of thing the casual Civil War tourist would ever find unaided. Also, the chapters describing the campaign history are very well written and provide just the right amount of detail. I did find that the (modern) maps in the book were somewhat less than adequate and, in many cases, there are no maps provided for some hard-to-find locations. I spent several hours before my trip printing off online street maps of each of the destinations. Without this prepration I probably would have gotten lost and would have seen a lot less. But, on balance, the book was exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to tour the sites related to the Atlanta Campaign.

About the Author

Juan H. Vera is Professor Emeritus, Department of Chemical Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He received his Dr. Ing. (Ing. Quim.) from Universidad F. Santa Maria, Chile; M.Sc. (Chem. Eng.), University of California, Berkeley; Ing. Quim., U. Tecnica del Estado, Chile; and Lic. Quim. Ind., U. Tecnica del Estado, Chile. At McGill University, he served as Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Engineering (2000–2004); Acting Dean, Faculty of Engineering (October–November 2003); President McGill Association of University Teachers, MAUT (1997–1998); Member of the Board of ResMIQ (2002–2004); Member of the Advisory Committee of Plasma Quebec (2002–2004); Engineering Faculty Representative to Plasturgie Quebec (2003); Engineering Faculty Representative to CRIAQ (2001–2004); and Associate Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (1985–1988). He is coauthor of two textbooks, a manual on Copper Metallurgy (in Spanish) and over 190 refereed publications in international journals. He has an International Patent on Extraction of Proteins and a Canadian Patent on Extraction of Heavy Metals. Grazyna Wilczek-Vera was Faculty Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry and Research associate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and Adjunct at the Department of Chemistry, University of Warsaw, Poland. She received the Principal’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching, 2008, at McGill University. She has authored 58 refereed publications, given 38 conference presentations, and coauthored two texts: Experimental Physical Chemistry for Biology Students, University of Warsaw, 1987 and Experimental Physical Chemistry for Chemistry Students, University of Warsaw, 1985. She also translated into Polish: R. A. Y. Jones, Physical and Mechanistic Organic Chemistry, Cambridge University Press, 1984. She received her Doctorate in Chemical Sciences (with Distinction), University of Warsaw and Master of Science in Chemistry (with Distinction), University of Warsaw, Poland.
