A famous violinist is shot while onstage. Then his priceless violin is stolen. Are the two events connected? It's just by chance DCI Oldroyd is in the audience enjoying the internationally renowned Schubert String Quartet playing his favorite, Death and the Maiden. Before his eyes, a violinist is shot and falls, dead. Pages and pages later, Oldroyd still doesn't know why the man was killed or who the killer was.Red herrings abound, and suspects are many. Carter is sent to London to deal with questions there. Turns out the violin was stolen on the spur of the moment, but that didn't end well for the thief. Yet the question of why the violinist was shot is what Oldroyd wrestles with. He does eventually figure it out. But I wonder why the violinist wasn't shot somewhere else, somewhere where their were no witnesses.Still, I like the character of Oldroyd and look forward to the next book in this series.
I am enjoying this series very much!! You really need to start with book 1 though to become with the primary characters and their various situations. Also, be prepared for the rather large number of characters the author introduces in both books. X-ray is very useful with that. The plot in this book was a little easier to follow than the first book because it deals with familiar topics...theft, murder, music, money. Can’t wait to start the 3rd one!
Well written, many twists and turns. Perhaps a few too many suspects, but he solves the initial murder with a tale of sorrow.
I think I gave this five stars because I found the information that the author included about the various Stradavarius violins so interesting. Not that the rest of the book wasn't worth a read, but I had no idea about all the Strads that have survived and what happened to them. In brief, a famous musician was shot and his rare and even more famous Strad was stolen. It was assumed that he was murdered so that someone could get their hands on the Strad. Was that the case? I like DCI Oldroyd and the other characters who peopled this story, and intend to read the next book in the series.
I din`t find this as good as the first book in this series but it still kept me guessing almost up to the end...which has a nice twist to it. I enjoyed all the information about the violins too...very interesting. I do like the characters in this series & find them believable. I also like the settings...the Piece Hall in Halifax being somewhere I have visited many times. i shall definitely be reading the next one :)
Again Mr. Ellis takes us to Yorkshire to solve a unique murder. We enter the World of chamber music and string instruments, featuring the famed Stradivarius violin. With numerous suspects and no logical clue how the murderer escaped our intrepid inspectors sort through clues, interviews and guesses to finally solve the case. This is book two and you will enjoy the story. Well worth your time.
The juxtaposition of murder, chamber music and Stradivarius violins makes for an intriguing background to this whodunit. DI Oldroyd's (and the author's) love of Yorkshire is evident, and provides a rich tapestry on which a very satisfying plot is woven. Red herrings and clues keep the reader guessing, while the convincing characters work their way to a solution.
The characters are cleverly human and often endearing. The descriptions of local flaura and fauna, geography and architecture, make the plot come to life. Each novel, so far, has been a delightful mini history lesson 🤠a bonus! Clever plots keep you reading on... surprise endings are satisfying.
